5 Ways to Prevent Damage to your Floors

Does your property have wood floors? Preventing damage and keeping hardwood floors pristine can be a challenge when rotating through multiple tenants. Make sure you and your residents are educated about how to prevent damage to wood floors with these 5 simple tips:

DON’T PUSH OR DRAG FURNITURE

In most cases, it is much easier to drag or push your furniture when redecorating a room. This particularly applies for large, bulky furniture. However, dragging or pushing furniture when redecorating a room increases the risk of scratching and scuffing your hardwood floors. The recommended solution is to lift your items to protect the floor from damage. So if you need to move furniture to redecorate a room, don’t hesitate to ask for help from a roommate, family member, or a friend.

ACQUIRE FURNITURE PADS

Furniture pads offer a layer of protection between wood floors and furniture and are a great solution for preventing scratches. Furniture pads come in a variety of materials, like rubber and felt. Felt pads are great because they allow to push and drag your furniture—intentionally or accidentally—without damaging your wood floors.

USE AN AREA RUG

The easiest way to protect your floors from damage is by investing in an area rug. A good rug will cushion your furniture and allow for movement without risking damage to the flooring. Plus, area rugs provide a decorative touch that can add color or personality to any property.

SAND OLD OR RUGGED FURNITURE LEGS

Even if you are not pushing or dragging furniture, the old, uneven legs on your sofa or chairs will damage your wood floor. Regularly check the legs of your furniture for damage, and if you notice any rugged or uneven spots, do not hesitate to sand them down to an even level. You may also consider replacing battered legs with new ones. Also, make sure to replace torn or old furniture pads in order to avoid scratches and scuffs on the floor.

INVEST IN FURNITURE WITH RUBBER WHEELS

When shopping for furniture for your home, consider pieces that come with rubber wheels. Rubber wheels are the safest option because they do not cause dents or scratches on wood floor. Rubber wheels also provide ease of movement, allowing for seamless repositioning without the need for lifting or shuffling.
