208.properties Guide: Move In Day

Did you know the average person moves 11.4 times? Moving doesn’t have to be difficult, but it sure can be if you are not prepared. Now that your lease is signed, you can start to prepare for the move.

Here is what you need to do before you move:

Notify your current LANDLORD

In your current lease, an exact amount of time required to give notice of move out will be stated. Your landlord needs to know you are moving out and will need to help you in the process.

A move out inspection is standard. Before the inspection, ask your landlord for the checklist, especially if you are wanting your security deposit back. Staying in communication with your current landlord will help your move out go smoothly and hopefully encourage a future renter recommendation.

Contact your new landlord

As a tenant of 208.properties, we have made your move in process as simple as possible! Once your application has been approved and your lease is signed, you will be sent an email to login to your online portal and a Welcome Packet. In the Welcome Packet, along with resources and information, there is a link to schedule your move in.


 

Prior to scheduling your move in, you will need to have all applicable utilities and utility start dates established.

Once you know your new address, you can select the forward date to be your move in date.

Don’t forget - you will also need to update your address with your bank, credit card companies, clinic and healthcare services, etc…

Update your Renters Insurance

Contact your Renters Insurance company to see what your need to do to switch your policy to a new rental property.

Check out your new neighborhood

You should know the location of important spots: grocery store, gym, hospital, work commute, etc. Take some time to be comfortable with your new surroundings.

PACK UP

Stay organized. Take this time to purge your belongings and as Marie Kondo says “ask yourself ‘does this spark joy?’” Moving is a great time to take inventory and label your boxes. By doing so, you will make unpacking easier and ensures that you won’t lose anything during the move.

Get ready to clean

Remember the move out checklist we discussed under the “Notify your Landlord” section? This is where it comes into play. Following your move out checklist will ensure you meet property standards. Landlords will deduct from your security deposit in order to cover cleaning and maintenance fees if anything is missed. You want to move in to a nice clean environment, and so do the tenants moving in after you.

It’s here! Getting your belongings from point-a to point-b can be a challenge in and of itself. Call in a favor from an old friend, family, or you can hire professional movers. Teamwork makes the dream work. Be diligent when unpacking and take time to get settled in. Welcome Home.
